Protecting your home, one chimney at a time

Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help keep your flue cleaner for longer.

Understanding Firewood Moisture Content

The moisture content of firewood significantly affects how cleanly it burns. Wood that is properly seasoned, or dried, burns more efficiently and produces less creosote buildup in your chimney. Creosote is a byproduct of burning wood that can clog your flue and pose a fire hazard.

Aim for wood with a moisture content of 20% or less. You can achieve this by storing your firewood in a dry place for at least six months to a year. Alternatively, you can invest in a moisture meter to test your firewood.

Types of Firewood for Cleaner Burns

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and beech burn longer and cleaner compared to softwoods such as pine or spruce. The dense fibers of hardwoods produce more heat and less residue, meaning less creosote in your chimney.

Softwoods can be used to start a fire due to their ease of ignition but should not be the main fuel source for long fires. If you prefer using softwoods, ensure they are well-seasoned to reduce moisture content.

Safe Wood Sources and Practices

Avoid burning treated, painted, or manufactured wood products, as they can release harmful chemicals when burned. These materials can also accelerate creosote buildup, leading to potential chimney fires.

Harvest firewood locally if possible, to avoid bringing pests into your home. Only purchase from reputable sources that guarantee the wood is seasoned and has a low moisture content.
